The Coach's Discipline: "You are not your Mother" Snippet from Katherine Deane

Addy: I am very excited to share a scene from Katherine Deane's solo release, The Coach's Discipline, today.

It is a very powerful scene and really spoke to me on a lot of levels. I saw a lot of myself described in the moments between Claire and Nick and even got emotional. You see I hear this line so often I hear it in my dreams. My mother was unable to care for me after I was born (we won't go into the father unit in this post) and I was lucky enough to have her parents take me in. I watched her destroy her own life over and over again as well as make poor choices along the way. I do not blame her nor do I hold anger but the abandonment and life decisions left me with very low self esteem and the constant fear of "turning" into her.

I also hear Nick's line from other family members, my siblings, my friends, my husband. They tell me how thoughtful I am for x,y, and z plus this plus that plus my honesty, loyalty, compassion, ect but are baffled when I stare at a mirror and see none of these qualities.

I've been doing some serious soul searching and meditation and am happily (and finally) moving towards my greatest good especially with the help of a really small knit group of five women who are all about supporting each other.

Katherine: Thanks for having me today, Addy! I am so glad this story touched you as it did me. And thanks for your really kind words about the story. I appreciate it. :)

This scene takes place in Nick's apartment, and shows Claire's despair over an over reaction on her part.

She nodded and stifled a small sob, then looked up at him with tears in her eyes, “I-I want you to spank me,” she sniffled.

“No.”

“Why not? You said to ask you for what I want, and right now I need you to spank me.” She turned her angry eyes onto him.

“Want and need are two separate things. You want me to spank you, so you can punish yourself for lashing out. But you don’t need that kind of interaction right now.” He explained carefully.

“Fine. Then what do I need, oh great leader?” she asked sarcastically as the anger blazed from her eyes.

She was baiting him; trying to get him to spank her. They both knew it. He needed to keep his own temper in check.

Taking a deep breath, he pulled them both to stand in front of the couch, and placed his hands firmly on her shoulders. “What you need—” he looked straight into her eyes, not letting her drop her gaze, “—is to be told you are good, you are kind, and you are loved.”

Her lower lip quivered, and her brow furrowed as she clenched her lips tightly together.

“You answer three a.m. distress calls from teammates who want to sob about their latest break up; you cross train with the injured runners so they don’t have to be alone; you offer support and loving advice to the women who can’t reach their goals.”

“How’d you know about all that?” She peeked up at him, and bit her lip in embarrassment.

“I coach women, Claire. Word gets around. Everyone thinks you’re amazing—except you.”

He pulled her chin back up to meet his gaze as he continued. “You are the kind of woman who doesn’t make fun of younger runners for their hero worship, who is generous with her time and her love, who is humble in all her accomplishments, and who cares, genuinely, for the emotional well being of others.”

The tears streamed down her face, and she hunched her shoulders in on herself.

“Look at me,” he commanded. “You are a beautiful, talented young woman who makes her own decisions in life, who does not let her past determine who she is or who she will be, who knows the worth of true friendship, and who is fighting every day of her life to make herself a better woman than she was the day before. You are Claire Jacobs. You are not your mother.”

She shook her head as she cried.

“Say it and believe it, Claire. I am. Not. My. Mother.”

Blurb: Marathon runner Claire Jacobs has always dreamed of making it to the Olympics, but she has a habit of getting in her own way. With the help of Nick Fox, a legendary coach known for his unconventional techniques, she prepares for one last shot at her dream. Traumatic memories of her experience with her last coach still haunt Claire, though, and in spite of his reputation she finds it hard to trust Nick’s authority.
The more time he spends with Claire, the more Nick finds himself enchanted by her drive and deep commitment to her fellow runners. But when her self-destructive behavior crosses the line, Nick realizes he has only one option to help the woman he has come to care about so much—he will need to give her the first spanking of her life and make sure it is one she will not forget.

Despite his firm discipline, Claire quickly comes to crave Nick’s dominance and direction, and soon he has grown to be much more than just her coach. But when jealousy and misunderstandings threaten to tear the team apart, will she run away as she always has in the past, or can she trust in her newfound love and race toward her goals with an open heart?
