Jaye Peaches: "Have you no hunger for me?" Excerpt from In Enemy Hands

Addy: I'm super happy to have Jaye Peaches over today. I'm so glad you came by!

Jaye: Thank you Adaline for having me visit your blog. I’m sharing an excerpt from my latest book – In Enemy Hands.

Hester has surrendered not only her house to her enemy, Daniel, but her love, too. She impatiently awaits his secret night-time visit, but so far, he’s not appeared.

The next day, she huffed, banged her chair about the dinner table, and pouted her lips in Daniel’s direction over her dish.
When Miriam, who had been waiting on them, left the room on an errand, he put down his knife. “Why the sour face?” he asked.
“I’m contemplating what you told me upon my bed, as I was ensnared by your lips. Remind me, was that not some time ago?” She’d leant forward, lowering her voice as she spoke. If he really knew how desperate she’d been for his company, he would appreciate her tenacity. To be his lover, she had to feel desired or else she was nothing but his whore and no amount of honourable words would save her from shame and ignominy once the war finished. “You wanted to know me in an intimate capacity and I have been much neglected. It makes me wonder if I’m naught but a passing fancy. An indulgence for you.” She knitted her eyebrows tight together.
Daniel shook his head. “Why, my dearest Hester, do you doubt my feelings towards you? Would you have me come to you ill or tired? What companion would I be if I lay by your side and snored? Worse, if I slumbered so heavily you could not rouse me and send me from your side before dawn. What would Miriam think, finding you in bed with your sworn enemy?”
Hester swallowed. She had failed to see the risks he undertook beyond tiptoeing to her room at an appropriate hour. However, she couldn’t believe there had been no opportunities to visit.
“Lovers by night, you said. Yet, night after night, I’m alone. Have you no hunger for me?”
“My appetite for you is bottomless, but I maintain we must be careful.”
“You lack courage, sir.” She stuck her chin up in the air and Daniel frowned.
“I would have you know I take the matter of our honour very seriously. I am most insulted you should question my valor. If time would permit, I might take you over my knee and give you a spanking for such an accusation.”
Hester sprang back in her seat, her eyes widening. “That is not part of our agreement. I would not allow it.”
Daniel wiped the broth from his chin. “My dear Hester, you are my ward, my charge, your permission is not required.” His eyes twinkled in the candlelight.
“My dignity will not tolerate such discipline. I would… I’m sure I would find a way to resist you. Scream or something.” She crossed her arms and under her skirts, she crossed her legs, too, aware of a perplexing arousal. How could he excite her so when she wanted to show her displeasure? However, the more he spoke of disciplining her, the harder it became to be cross with him. His reasons for avoiding her were perfectly justifiable and she shouldn’t have questioned his courage—he rode out every day to face dangers.
“Screaming is what we want, isn’t it? To warn off your servants?” He slapped his thighs. “So my dear, what shall it be, a brisk reminder of my sturdy hand or will you show me patience?”
She could not believe how tempted she was by the warming palm of his hand. Hot blood rose up into her face as she imagined herself laid across his lap, skirts lifted, bottom bared, and the great hall echoing to the sound of rapid smacks on her rounded rump. She fanned a hand before her face. She started to stutter an uncertain response, when Miriam appeared carrying a tray of sweetmeats: candied chestnuts.

Blurb:
When the rest of her household flees the family estate during the English Civil War, Hester Cavell, a proud Royalist supporter, stays behind hoping to protect her home. Unfortunately for Hester, she quickly finds that she is no match for a troop of Parliamentarian dragoons, led by Captain Daniel Hasard. Once the dragoons take control of her house, Daniel lets Hester stay with her servants, but he warns her that he will punish her severely if she causes any trouble.
Despite Daniel’s warning, it isn’t long before Hester risks her safety and attempts to sabotage his troops, earning her a long, hard switching on her bare bottom. But as the weeks pass, she begins to realize that the man behind the enemy uniform is loving, intelligent, and kind, and she can’t help but grow more and more attracted to him. Daniel returns Hester’s affection, and while they remain enemies by day to protect her reputation, they soon become passionate lovers by night.
Not wanting the servants to guess at their games, Hester continues to make a pretence at mischief, and Daniel continues to punish her sternly. But when a servant at last finds out the truth of their relationship, will it bring an end to their newfound romance, or will Daniel cast aside politics and allegiances and ask for her hand in marriage?
